The Zeravshan river irrigates more than 500,000 hectares of land in the Samarkand and Bukhara regions and also supplies some water for adjacent basins. Archeologists say that artificial irrigation in the Zeravshan valley originated way back in the 5th-6th centuries B.C.
Numerous hydroengineering structures were built to improve the distribution of water among irrigation systems supplied by the Zeravshan river. The biggest of them are the May 1st dam, the Dam-khodzha, Kharkhur, Shafirkan, Akkara-Darya and Navoi hydroengineering systems.
On our way to Samarkand we visited the Samarkand Hydrostructure on the Zeravshan river.
