Vast tracts of desert land in the lower reaches of the Amu Darya surrounding the relatively small oases of Khorezm and Karakalpakistan are irrigated by the Tashsakin irrigation system with a discharge at the head of 240 cubic meters per second. The Shavat canal was expanded to have a discharge of 119 cubic meters per second in order to improve water supply to these lands.
