The problem of the guaranteed water supply of the lower reaches of the Amu Darya was solved by building the Takhiatash and Tuyamuyun hydroengineering systems with a reservoir 7.8 thousand million cubic meters in volume, which ensured water for 500,000 hectares of already irrigated lands and made it possible to increase their area to one million hectares. The first section of the Tuyamuyun reservoir was put into operation in 1975.
